Passage: Matthew 5:43-48

Preacher: Mike Churchill

Series: Matthew

Category: Theology, Expository

Detail:

Sermon on the Mount 5:43-48 Love Your Enemies

  1.  Introduction
  2.  Last week we saw Jesus say resist not.
  3.  This morning we are asked to love those who may be our enemies
  4.  Todays verse gives us the standard of the Kingdom - To love as God loves
  5.  How do we match up with that standard?

II  You have heard it said…vs 43

"You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy

  1.  The scribes and Pharisees left something out and added an additional verse!
  2.  They left out “to love your neighbor as yourself
  3.  They added “and hate your enemy
  4.  WHY - Because they did not want to love everyone - they wanted to hate some people.

III.  But I say unto you…vs 44-48

But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,  ‎45 so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.  ‎46 For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?  ‎47 And if you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same?  ‎48 You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

  1.  We are to love our enemies - what a statement!
  2.  We are to love those that slapped us, sued us, forced us to carry their burdens for a mile, borrowed from us!  Wow - that is hard, Lord!
  3.  There is a great story in the Old Testament that portrays this principal of Jesus clearly
  4.      Jonah!
  5.  The Who vs 44
  6.  “ You shall love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you vs 44
  7.  The Why vs 45-48
  8.  So that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven.vs 45
  9.  We are distinct from the world vs 46-47
  10.  Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect" (v. 48).
  11.  Application, and conclusion
