Colossians - Sufficiency of Christ

2:1-7 - “I want you to know”

 

  1.   Introduction

 

  1.  Paul has carefully laid a sure foundation for the Colossians to stand firm in the face of the false teachers             descending upon this little church.  He reviews his ministry
  2. Rejoicing in his suffering for the church,
  3. Resolute in his mission given to him by God for the church.
  4. Fierce in his ministry, his defense of the gospel and his proclamation of the gospel.
  5. Sincere in his proclamation, admonition, teaching and presenting everyone mature in Christ

 

II, Paul’s Struggle vs -1   

  1.  Paul’s love for the church - his love for Christ results in striving to bring them into maturity.

 

III. Encouraged in their hearts vs 2(a)

  1.  The basic meaning of encouraged (para-kah-low) is to comfort or console someone.
  2.  It can also mean strengthen and that is exactly what the Colossians needed - to be strengthen

                To be encouraged.

  1.  It was Paul’s prayer that their hearts & minds would be fit - ready to defend God’s word and the Church.

 

  1. Knit together in love vs 2(b)
  2.  To be united or 1 unit.
  3. We cannot unravel our lives from those of other believers.

 

  1.  Full assurance of Understanding vs 2(c)-3
  2.  Paul desires that the Colossians experience all the riches or wealth that come from the full assurance of understanding and knowing of God’s mystery - which is Christ

 

  1. I say this in order that no one may delude you with plausible arguments. Vs 4
  2.  Paul warns the Colossians to be careful - I do not want you to be led astray by anyone tricking you-         deceiving you with fine sounding arguments, those things that may sound right but when peeled are rotten within.

 

VII. Paul rejoices in their “shields up” faith vs 5

  1.  The words here bring up an order of heavy infantry, with close ranks and files, and shields up and overlapping!

 

VIII    Walking in Christ - rooted like a tree vs 6-7(a)

  1. Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and                 established in the faith, just as you were taught,

 

V1V Abounding in Thanksgiving 7(b)

  1.  This thanksgiving flows from Believers that are rooted deep in Christ
