  1.  Introduction

 

  1.  Key verse - 15 “Do your best to present yourself to God, as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of Truth  (CUT IT STRAIGHT1)
  2.  1st Timothy, Paul wrote to Timothy to confront some false teaching
  3.  2nd Timothy Paul writes to Timothy to continue this battle and defense against false teaching.
  4.  There is a right way and a wrong way to study Scripture

 

  1. Wrong Way vs 14 and vs 16-18

 

  1.  The wrong way- the false teachers’ way leads to ruin and more ungodliness
  2.  The word ruin means serious destruction - we get the word “catastrophe” from it.
  3.  Improper use of God’s word can destroy lives.
  4.  Timothy reminds them of what I have already said to you and keeps on reminding them.
  5.  In the presence of God.
  6.  Remind them not to quarrel about words or waging war with words.
  7.  The false teachers liked to display their “knowledge” only to show their pridefulness.
  8.  The false teachers were pulling others to spiritual ruin.
  9.  We need to ask as we study the Bible “What does this teach me about God and about myself? How

                        should I apply this to my life?

  1.  Avoid irreverent “babble” or discussions of empty things that are meant to hurt others. Using God’s                         word for worldly gain or success
  2.  Health and wealth gospel
  3.  Hymenaeus and Philetus were examples of talk - it was like gangrene- spread quickly and was                         harmful -even deadly.  Must be cut off!
  4.  Teaching false truth regarding the resurrection.

 

III. Right Way vs 15

 

  1. Why was the Bible given to us - to fill our minds with facts and knowledge?  NO!  given to help                         us grow in Godliness
  2.  Keys to our Bible study:
  3.  Must be redeemed
  4.  Must be motivated to study and read
  5.  Must utilized various tools given to us including godly men/women that teach truth
  6. As we read and listen to other teachers - we need to ask ourselves:
  7.  Does this honor God and exalt Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord?
  8.  Does this produce humility?
  9.  Does this promote holiness’?

 

  1. Depart from Iniquity vs 19

 

  1.  God’s solid foundation stands firm - God’s salvific work through Jesus Christ stands
  2.  If gates of hell cannot overcome the church, neither will anything else.
  3.  The Lord know who are His
